0800WHATSUP LAUNCHES YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Children's songs about What's Up now available on YouTube.

It all started in 2007, when Joseph, Horan and Kevin from Aranui School in Christchurch recorded a rap song celebrating What's Up.

We added this to the hold music on the counselling telephone queue and in 2008, other callers began to ask if they could contribute songs for the hold music.

Some simple rules were established:

  1.   The songs must be about What's Up;

  2.   The songs must not be offensive or negative in their tone;

  3.   The songs must be of no more than one minute duration (some have been accepted that exceed this length by a little).

In keeping with What's Up's principles of child-centred practice and empowerment, no criteria regarding musical quality have been imposed; the songs are by children freely expressing themselves and exercising their right to be heard, within the framework provided.

The trickle quickly turned into a stream and by May 2009, more than 200 songs had been submitted by children and young people.

In response to requests from callers to be able to listen to their songs, the songs are loaded onto online video site YouTube, with a channel dedicated to them.

The songs are organised into Playlists according to the month in which they were recorded. Because the songs are recorded anonymously, each song is entitled with the recording date.

The YouTube 0800WHATSUP channel will be kept up to date, with a delay of about a week between the time a song is recorded and uploaded to the channel.
